Taste of Food Poisoning

The Taste of Chicago has been around for more than two decades.  Dozens and dozens of local restaurants set up tents in Grant Park to feed a million or two people early in July. There's never been a problem with the food making people sick in all the years it's been around.

Until this summer.

It started with a dose of salmonella knocking out about twelve people. And now we're up to over three hundred. The only thing everybody had in common was the booth that sold Persian Cuisine. Persia is the secret word for IRAN.

It's looking like the hummus may have been bad.

The problem isn't that the hummus was made at the restaurant. The problem is that the hummus was provided by a supplier, who brought it in from another country.  Such as IRAN.

Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

I'm thinking Zantac.  What are YOU thinking?

I'm thinking that I never buy from "street vendors" even during these events. Too much can go wrong. Once in Chicago I bought one piece of vegitarian pitza and went down for the count.  Guess nobody eats veg. in Chicago.  Anne

Assume the contractor in Iran did everything right - clean cutting surfaces and cutlery, clean and/or sterile vessels to put the finished product into for shipping. The food is refrigerated properly through it's entire journey to the booth at the Taste of Chicago where the lameass dude who opens the bucket and pours it into the serving vessel has been in contact with a salmonella contaminated cutting board just prior to dishing up the hummus -- there's your contamination.

And the damn fool Yanks will blame the Iranian contractor every time.

Having had severe food poisoning on several occasions from eating in restaurants that are considered to be "fine dining", I'll take the street vendor every time. At least then there's an excuse for getting sick...

I guess that ends the speculation as to where Michael Chertoff's "gut feeling" came from.

You know, Mr. Whosidozits may be right.  Assuming that a Perisan is posioning hundreds of Americans because his homeland has called for the death of Americans and the obliteration of our allies is pretty outrageous.  It's about the same as throwing out all those uneaten steamed buns just because they came from a street vendor in Beijing.  http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/07/12/health/main3049080.shtml
